Monoethanolamine is a viscous, hygroscopic amino alcohol with an unpleasant ammonia-like odor. Its chemical formula is C2H7NO and It is a component of lecithin and is widely distributed in biological tissue. It is a solid below 51°F and is used as a surfactant, fluorimetric reagent, and to remove CO2 and H2S from natural gas and other gases. MEA is produced by reacting ethylene oxide with aqueous ammonia.
